My art career began ten years before my retirement from a forty-year career as a medical doctor. Contemplating what to do next and recalling how much I loved the art history courses taken as an undergraduate, pursuing a degree in art history came to mind. Then it occurred to me that making art would be a better way to expend my creative energy.
I began by taking a course in “Drawing On The Right Side of The Brain”. After that, while mostly self-taught, I got guidance from professional artists, attended workshops, and took figurative drawing and painting courses at Eastern Michigan University. After a few years, I was invited to show my work in a gallery setting, and an emerging career began.
My works are clearly representational, but not necessarily realistic depictions of the subjects. The goal and challenge is to make artistic sense, through the interplay of compositional elements, and thereby create interesting and aesthetically pleasing products.
I began doing still life, but after some years my interests turned to horses, portraiture and figurative works. Acrylics have been the most common media, but I also use gouache, charcoal, pastels, Conte crayon, graphite and inks, often in combination.
